Amazon has announced a reduction in the cost of its basic health care plan for employees, lowering the weekly premium to $5 from over $7. The new rate will take effect during Open Enrollment this fall for 2026 benefits. Copays for doctor visits under the plan will also decrease from $40 to $5.

The company stated that coverage remains unchanged for employees and their families despite the lower cost. “Amazon is committed to its employees’ health and well-being. Full-time employees get medical coverage, regardless of their level or position within the company, starting on the first day of the job—there’s no waiting period before benefits kick in,” according to Amazon.

This change means employees will save 28% on weekly premiums and pay 88% less when visiting a doctor compared to previous rates. Amazon noted that it is investing over $1 billion to raise pay and reduce health care costs for U.S. fulfillment and transportation workers, bringing average total compensation above $30 per hour when including elected benefits.

The basic health care plan includes preventative services such as screenings and immunizations at no additional cost. The $5 deductible covers pediatric care, office visits, substance use disorder treatment, and various therapies including physical, speech, occupational, and mental health therapy.

Amazon emphasized that “This ‘Day 1’ coverage ensures employees and their families have immediate access to the strong foundation health care provides.” Additional benefits include mental health resources, cancer support services, 24/7 access to medical advice, up to 20 weeks paid leave for birth parents (and six weeks for eligible supporting parents), as well as an Employee Assistance Program offering round-the-clock work-life support and free short-term counseling.

Employees are encouraged to review other available plans during enrollment since options vary based on location, hours worked, employment duration, and type of employment (such as seasonal or temporary). Part-time and seasonal staff may become eligible for medical insurance after 90 days.

According to Amazon’s data, more than 24,000 employees have used family-building benefits since those offerings were introduced.
