Amazon MGM Studios has announced that it will produce a sequel to the 1987 sci-fi comedy “Spaceballs.” The new film is scheduled for theatrical release in 2027 and will see several original cast members returning to their roles.

Rick Moranis, known for his work in “Ghostbusters” and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” will reprise his role in what marks a rare return to the big screen. Mel Brooks, who played President Skroob and Yogurt in the original movie, will also return. Other returning cast members include Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and George Wyner.

The sequel will introduce new actors to the franchise. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan are among those joining the cast.

Plot details remain confidential. The studio describes the project as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.”

Josh Greenbaum is set to direct the film. The screenplay is being written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Producers include Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment; Mel Brooks; Josh Gad; Josh Greenbaum; and Kevin Salter. Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez are executive producers.

Amazon MGM Studios continues to invest in its virtual soundstage technology powered by AWSPlus. This technology aims to provide filmmakers with greater flexibility during production.
