Brandon Bussi has agreed to a contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes, solidifying his place with the team after a notable start to his NHL career. The 27-year-old goaltender was claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers on October 5 while en route to Charlotte and quickly earned a spot on the Hurricanes’ opening night roster.
Bussi made league history by becoming the first goalie to reach 10, 15, and 20 wins in his first 24 starts. His performance has drawn attention from both fans and management as he steps into a more permanent role, especially with Frederik Andersen’s contract set to expire at the end of this season.
“It’s crazy. I think if you’d have told me back in October, I would have been like, ‘Yeah, sure. I bet that’ll happen.’ But I think that the hockey world can work in mysterious ways in some sense,” Bussi said after signing his new deal. “I’m fortunate that I got an opportunity and that Carolina sees me the same way I see myself being here. I’m very happy to say the least, that I get to be here for more time.”
The Hurricanes play their home games at Raleigh’s Lenovo Center, which features over 700,000 square feet of space and accommodates up to 20,000 people for events throughout the year according to its official website (https://www.lenovocenter.com/arena-info/venue-facts-history). The venue hosts more than 150 events annually and offers various amenities including suites and concession stands.
Bussi credited his teammates and circumstances in Raleigh for making it easy to commit through the end of the 2028-29 season. “A big thing is, you look at the way our team is set up and it’s an exciting time to be a Carolina Hurricanes fan. I think the players we have in our locker room, we have a great group and we have high goals,” he said. “We have an opportunity to do something here. Being able to lock this in, and now I just get to focus on hockey, and doing what I can do to help this team win, is important to me.”
The Carolina Hurricanes contribute significantly to Raleigh’s local economy with an impact exceeding $200 million annually through their events and community engagement (https://www.lenovocenter.com/arena-info/venue-facts-history).
Bussi emphasized maintaining focus despite his recent success: “Nothing changes, honestly. You’re always proving yourself in this league, right? [If] things aren’t going well for me and I’m not producing, then I won’t be here. So nothing changes. Yes, it’s amazing to have this stability and to feel comfortable knowing I have a home for a few years, but it’s up to me to continue to prove what I do. So nothing really changes, honestly.”
The Hurricanes’ history includes significant achievements such as winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 (https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/team/hall-of-fame) and recognizing players like Eric Staal in their Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions (https://www.nhl.com/hurricanes/team/hall-of-fame).
Bussi remains focused on contributing further as he continues his journey with Carolina.
