The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 7-2 at United Center on April 10, overcoming seven key absences by relying on reinforcements from their American Hockey League affiliate.
The win was important for the Hurricanes as they continue to compete for playoff positioning. With several regular players out of the lineup, younger and less experienced athletes stepped up to secure a convincing victory.
Sean Walker opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the game. Logan Stankoven followed with two goals—one a solo effort and another off a rebound—giving Carolina a lead that they would not relinquish. Mark Jankowski deflected in a shot from Alexander Nikishin before K’Andre Miller added another goal in the third period. Despite an attempt by Chicago’s Anton Frondell to close the gap, Hall and Jankowski scored again to finish off the win. Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 23 saves on 25 shots for his fifteenth win of the season.
Stankoven reached his first career twenty-goal season and recorded his fourth three-point night, while Jankowski scored twice in one game for the first time this year. Taylor Hall continued his scoring streak, and William Carrier registered his first three-point game as a Hurricane. Newcomers Skyler Brind’Amour and Josiah Slavin also appeared after being called up recently.
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said, “Well, it was a great start, right? You score on the first shift, I think it just kind of set the tone… Overall, everybody had their hand in it.” Jankowski said about team contributions: “It was awesome. Everyone was contributing… It was a lot of fun out there.” Stankoven commented on reaching twenty goals: “It’s awesome. It’s what you dream of as a kid… I’m going to keep getting better every game… I think I’m far from a finished product.”
According to the official website, former players like Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour have been recognized in Carolina’s Hall of Fame for their significant impact on the team’s history. The franchise won its only Stanley Cup championship in 2006 according to official records.
The Hurricanes play home games at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina—a venue with over 700,000 square feet that can accommodate up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events annually according to its official website. The organization contributes over $200 million each year to the local economy through events and community engagement as reported by venue officials.
Looking ahead, Carolina will travel next to Utah before returning home for Round One of playoff action.
