The Carolina Hurricanes shut out the Ottawa Senators 2-0 in Game 1 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series, with Frederik Andersen making 22 saves at Lenovo Center Arena on April 19.

The victory marks a strong start for the Hurricanes as they seek to advance in the postseason. The game featured intense physical play from the outset, including a fight between captains Jordan Staal and Brady Tkachuk immediately after puck drop.

Logan Stankoven scored early in the second period, assisted by Jackson Blake, to give Carolina an initial lead. Taylor Hall added another goal later in the third period following a scramble near Ottawa’s net. Andersen and his teammates held off a late push from Ottawa, especially during a final six-on-four advantage for the Senators.

Stankoven achieved his third career playoff game-winning goal before turning 24 years old and became only the third player in franchise history with three goals in postseason-opening games. Blake recorded two assists, joining Stankoven as part of only the sixth duo under age 23 since relocation to achieve multiple points each in one playoff game for Carolina. Andersen’s performance earned him his sixth career playoff shutout, tying him for sixth-most among goaltenders born outside North America.

Rod Brind’Amour said after the win: “Everybody out there was giving it all they had. That’s what you saw. (There) was not a lot of room and everybody was fighting for everything.” Hall said about Game 1: “We played hard. They played hard. I think both teams have a lot to be proud of tonight with that effort.”

The Lenovo Center serves as home venue for Carolina and features over 700,000 square feet along with amenities such as suites and concession stands according to its official website. The arena can accommodate up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events annually according to its official website. The team also contributes over $200 million annually to Raleigh’s local economy through events and community engagement according to its official website.

The Hurricanes have recognized players like Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour for their significant contributions by inducting them into their Hall of Fame according to their official website. The franchise won its first Stanley Cup championship in 2006 according to their official website.

Looking ahead, Carolina will return for Game 2 against Ottawa on Monday night at Lenovo Center.
