The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Apr. 14 that defensemen Joel Nystrom and Ronan Seeley have been recalled from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis, according to General Manager Eric Tulsky.
This move is significant as it strengthens the team’s defensive lineup during a critical point in the season. The Hurricanes play their home games at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, a venue that accommodates up to 20,000 people and hosts more than 150 events each year, according to the official website.
Nystrom, age 23, has recorded nine points (one goal and eight assists) with a plus-5 rating over 37 games for the Hurricanes this season. He also contributed nine points in 35 AHL games with Chicago. Originally from Karlstad, Sweden, Nystrom is in his first full North American season after five years playing for Färjestad BK in Sweden’s top league. He was selected by Carolina in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL draft.
Seeley, also age 23, led all Wolves defensemen this season with ten goals and twelve assists across sixty-seven games. Over his AHL career he has accumulated seventy-one points and previously captained Everett Silvertips during his junior career before being drafted by Carolina in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
The Hurricanes are known for their strong contributions both on and off the ice. The team’s activities generate an economic impact exceeding $200 million annually through events and community engagement at Lenovo Center according to their official website. Notably, they won their first Stanley Cup championship in 2006 as reported by their Hall of Fame page.
Several prominent players such as Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour have been recognized for their achievements by being inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame according to team records. The organization continues its tradition of player development with recalls like those announced today.
