The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 in Game 1 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs second-round series, according to a May 3 announcement from the team.

The result gives the Hurricanes their fifth consecutive win to start the postseason and extends their strong playoff performance. The team’s quick start was evident as Logan Stankoven scored just 90 seconds into the game, followed by a goal from Jackson Blake six minutes later. Stankoven added another goal late in the second period, bringing his total to six this postseason.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen recorded his seventh career playoff shutout and surpassed Cam Ward for most playoff wins in franchise history with his 24th victory as a Hurricane. Andersen said, “We have a goal in mind, and that’s what’s really important. Obviously, we’ve got to get there and that means getting the wins, so we’ll take it. It’s a team thing. We’re working hard to collect wins…”

Stankoven became the first player in franchise history to score in five straight playoff games and is now tied for league-high goals this postseason. He said about his success: “I felt like, since the Olympic Break, things have started to turn and pucks have started to go in. I think as a player, I’ve been learning what areas of the ice to find to get shots off. I think that, in time, things change, and I feel like I’ve been able to develop as a player and a person.”

Mike Reilly made an impact with two assists during his first playoff game as a Hurricane after stepping in for injured Alexander Nikishin. Reilly said: “I’m definitely the extra guy, but I understand. I’m trying to stay as ready as I can and as sharp as I can… when your name gets called, you’ve got to be ready.” Captain Jordan Staal commented on setting an early tone: “I thought from the get-go we had a great start… Everything was off to a good start.” Head coach Rod Brind’Amour praised Stankoven’s line for maintaining momentum after time off: “That was the big question… That line’s been great… it’s been months of it.” Blake also credited teammates Stankoven and Hall for their effort: “Stanks has been unbelievable this postseason… Hallsy too… They’ve been awesome and really fun to play with.”

According to the official website, players such as Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour are recognized by induction into Carolina’s Hall of Fame for significant contributions; both are associated with past successes including winning the Stanley Cup championship in 2006. The Hurricanes play at Lenovo Center Arena which features over 700,000 square feet across multiple seating levels with amenities including suites and concessions according to its official website. The venue accommodates up to 20,000 people while hosting more than 150 events annually as reported by its official site.

Looking ahead, Carolina will host Game 2 against Philadelphia at Lenovo Center on Monday.
