The Carolina Hurricanes have announced the signing of forward Nikolaj Ehlers to a six-year contract. The agreement will provide Ehlers with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $8.5 million through the 2030-31 season.
“Nikolaj was the top free agent available on July 1, and we are proud that he’s chosen to make Carolina his home,” said Eric Tulsky, General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes. “He’s a highly-skilled winger who can really skate and will fit very well with our forward group.”
Ehlers, aged 29, has just completed his tenth NHL season with the Winnipeg Jets. During the 2024-25 season, he scored 24 goals and added 39 assists for a total of 63 points in 69 regular-season games, achieving a plus-14 rating. Among Jets skaters, he ranked third in points and fourth in both goals and assists. In eight Stanley Cup playoff games, he tied for first on the team in goals (5) and tied for third in points (7).
Originally drafted by Winnipeg as the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft, Ehlers has accumulated a total of 520 points from 225 goals and 295 assists across his career. He has consistently scored over twenty goals in eight out of ten seasons, setting a personal best with 29 goals during the 2017-18 campaign.
Before joining professional ranks, Ehlers played two seasons with Halifax Mooseheads in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League where he twice surpassed the hundred-point mark. His accolades include winning the RDS Cup as Rookie of the Year and Mike Bossy Trophy as Top Prospect during his debut QMJHL season.
Internationally, Ehlers has represented Denmark at various events including multiple IIHF World Championships and Winter Olympic qualifiers.
