The Carolina Hurricanes reported on May 14 that the team is using a rare break between playoff rounds to rest and prepare for the upcoming Eastern Conference Final. With several days off before their next opponent is decided, players and staff say they are focusing on mental recovery as well as staying physically sharp.
This pause in play comes at a crucial time in the playoffs, allowing athletes to recover from the stress of high-stakes games. Captain Jordan Staal said, “It’s really just turning that anxiety meter off a bit. That stress meter. Not thinking about the game. Turning your mind off is the biggest thing.” He added, “When you’re out this long, it’s good to take some time and enjoy your family time. Regrouping the mind and the body is very important.”
Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said after practice, “I think that worked, what we did. We’ve got to stay sharp, but we’re not diving too much into (preparation for) anybody. We’re worrying about our stuff.” Taylor Hall pointed out benefits of entering Round 3 healthy: “There are positives and negatives to it. I think the big positive is that we’re onto the third round relatively unscathed and healthy… That’s the advantage that we’re going to have.” Hall also said, “We’re going to be hockey-ready if the series goes long(er). Rod, our strength staff, and all of our staff do a really good job making sure that we’re ready, athletically.”
Staal commented on practice routines: “(Practice is) always a good thing. Roddy’s practices are enough,” he said with a laugh. Sebastian Aho added his confidence in preparation: “One thing I love about this group is that when we show up to work, we work… You show up to work, and you work your butt off… I have no worries about this team. We’ll be ready whenever we start.” Jaccob Slavin emphasized continued motivation: “You take the win, and you take your rest… We’ve got to do all eight wins again just to get to the end.” Frederik Andersen reflected on experience: “We talk a lot about how the first step is to make the playoffs and take big steps after that… We’re going to be in for a good battle next series.”
The Carolina Hurricanes play their home games at Lenovo Center in Raleigh; according to the official website, this venue accommodates up to 20,000 people across multiple seating levels with amenities such as suites and concession stands while hosting more than 150 events annually.
Players like Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour have been recognized by the official website for their significant contributions by being inducted into Carolina’s Hall of Fame; additionally, winning their first Stanley Cup in 2006 marked an important milestone for both players and fans.
Looking ahead at least four or five more days without game action as Buffalo Sabres face Montreal Canadiens in their semifinal series means continued focus will be needed before resuming competition at home ice.
