RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Cayden Primeau to a one-year contract for the 2025-26 season. The deal will see Primeau earn $775,000. This signing follows his acquisition from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Primeau, aged 25 and son of former Hurricanes captain Keith Primeau, had a challenging stint with the Canadiens last season. He recorded a 2-3-1 record with a 4.70 goals-against average (GAA) and an .836 save percentage (SV%) over 11 games. Most of his time was spent with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he achieved notable success with a 21-2-3 record, a 1.96 GAA, and a .927 SV% across 26 games. In eight playoff appearances with Laval, he posted a 3-4-0 record, along with a 3.27 GAA and an .878 SV%. His performance earned him the Harry Holmes Memorial Award for best goaltending duo alongside Connor Hughes.
Over his career in the NHL from 2019 to 2025, Primeau has accumulated a record of 13-24-7, with a GAA of 3.69 and an SV% of .884 including two shutouts in 55 games—all while playing for Montreal. In his AHL career spanning from 2019 to 2025 with Laval, he has registered an impressive record of 84-44-18, maintaining a GAA of 2.60 and an SV% of .912 along with thirteen shutouts over the course of 149 games.
Before turning professional, Primeau played at Northeastern University from 2017 to 2019 where he compiled a remarkable collegiate career that included being named Hockey East Goaltender of the Year twice and winning several other accolades such as New England Rookie of the Year and Mike Richter Award for Top Collegiate Goalie.
Internationally, Primeau has represented Team USA at various levels including winning silver at the IIHF U20 World Championship in 2019 and gold at the IIHF U18 World Championship in 2017.
He was originally drafted by Montreal as their seventh-round pick in the NHL Draft back in 2017.
