Coastal Resources Commission plans meetings in New Bern with focus on coastal management

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) is scheduled to hold its regular business meeting on August 27 and 28 at the Tryon Palace – History Center in New Bern. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on August 27 and resume at 9 a.m. the following day.

A public input and comment period will take place at 3 p.m. on August 27, with individual comments limited to three minutes at the chair’s discretion. Members of the public can attend in person or join the meeting online via the DEQ’s YouTube channel.

The Coastal Resources Advisory Council will not convene during August.

On August 27, agenda items include consideration of variance requests from Krichman of Carolina Beach regarding artificial turf within a buffer zone, and from Hreha-Caruso of Frisco concerning a covered deck within a buffer zone. Other topics include periodic review of existing rules, adoption considerations for regulations such as Urban Waterfront (15A NCAC 07H .0209), Jockey’s Ridge AEC (15A NCAC 07H .0508), and Use Standards for Ocean Hazard Areas Exceptions (15A NCAC 07H .0309). The commission will also review fiscal analysis for a general permit covering replacement of existing bridges and culverts, as well as consider approval of the Bogue Banks Beach Management Plan. A proposed closed session is scheduled to discuss Ready v. CRC, Carteret County, case number 24 CVS 1000, pursuant to state law N.C.G.S. §143-318.11(a)(3).

On August 28, topics include periodic review of regulations related to the North Carolina Coastal Reserve (15A NCAC 07O), updates on annual rule reviews, an overview and science panel report on inlet hazard area boundaries, approval considerations for oceanfront and inlet erosion rates and setback factors, and litigation updates relevant to the commission.
