The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management will host a public event on May 19 to commemorate the transfer of The Topsail Nature Preserve to state management. The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony and remarks from DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson, as well as participation from state and local officials and conservation partners.

This event marks a milestone in the ongoing effort to conserve ecologically significant coastal areas in North Carolina while ensuring responsible public access and stewardship.

The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at Sound Access #1, located at the South Topsail parking lot entrance in Topsail Beach. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 12:30 p.m. due to limited parking availability and should wear comfortable shoes for walking to the oceanside beach where the program will take place.

Additional parking is available at The Assembly Building at 720 Channel Boulevard, with transport provided from this location only between noon and 1 p.m. Cars parked here must be removed by 2:30 p.m., according to information released by organizers.

Media representatives interested in attending or requesting onsite interviews with DEQ leadership are asked to RSVP by noon on Monday, May 18.
