The City of Raleigh announced on May 14 that crews have planted this year’s crop of sunflowers at Dix Park, a popular summer attraction featuring more than one hundred thousand flowers across five acres.
The annual sunflower planting is a significant event for the community, drawing visitors to enjoy the vibrant fields and providing an opportunity for residents to experience nature within the city. The process requires detailed planning and coordination between Raleigh Water and the Parks Department.
“We have to pick out the variety, look at days to maturity, and of course think about weed control,” Michael Gregory, senior fleet maintenance specialist with Raleigh Water, said. Crews carefully organize the planting by spacing five rows of sunflowers followed by a six-foot walkway before continuing with ten more rows. Gregory said each year brings anticipation as they hope weather conditions will be favorable for blooming at just the right time.
James Bullock, Horticulture Supervisor at Dix Park and other parks in Raleigh, described his work as rewarding. “It’s very gratifying. I grew up on a farm and I find it rewarding,” said Bullock. “To see people come here and look at them, and then to see how happy it makes people, that makes me happy.” This year’s chosen variety is Barnburner sunflowers, which are expected to bloom in July.
The City of Raleigh focuses on delivering public services through its city manager’s office according to the official website. The city council oversees local policy decisions across several districts as outlined on its official website.
Looking ahead, residents can anticipate another colorful display this summer as crews continue their efforts to ensure successful sunflower blooms.
