As summer temperatures increase energy consumption, the Duke Energy Foundation is taking steps to assist families in need. The foundation announced a $400,000 contribution to the Share the Light Fund, aimed at helping customers facing financial difficulties during the summer months. This initiative supports agencies that provide utility assistance.

The allocation of funds spans six states: North Carolina will receive $100,000; South Carolina and Florida each will get $75,000; Indiana will be allocated $50,000; and Ohio and Kentucky combined will receive $100,000.

This summer funding supplements annual support for the Share the Light Fund, which assists nearly 16,000 low-income households each year with overdue balances and reconnection charges. Over the past three years, total contributions from Duke Energy and its affiliates have reached $11 million.

Amy Strecker, president of Duke Energy Foundation, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “We know that behind every request for assistance is a story – a family, a friend, a community member working to get through a tough time,” she said. “Through Share the Light Fund and our local partners, we’re able to support our neighbors in their moment of need.”

In addition to financial aid efforts, Duke Energy employees are volunteering with organizations like Crisis Assistance Ministry to distribute hygiene kits and raise awareness about available help.

Duke Energy has been providing utility assistance for over 40 years through programs now under the Share the Light Fund. These efforts aim to help families manage energy costs during extreme weather conditions.

The foundation encourages public participation by offering donation options such as rounding up monthly bills. Contributions are matched by Duke Energy and its foundation.

To further assist customers in managing energy use and reducing costs, Duke Energy offers tools such as usage alerts and free home energy assessments. Customers can also benefit from payment plans and due date extensions for added flexibility.

Duke Energy Foundation provides over $30 million annually in philanthropic support across communities served by Duke Energy customers. It is funded by shareholders of Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), one of America’s largest energy holding companies headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., serving millions across several states with electric utilities and natural gas services.
