Duke Energy Foundation is allocating $1.5 million through its 2025 Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) grant program to enhance community preparedness and resilience ahead of the storm season. The funds will be distributed among local agencies within Duke Energy’s service areas and will continue to support a partnership with the American Red Cross.
As extreme weather events become more frequent, the foundation aims to fund training, lifesaving equipment, and innovative technology for disaster planning and recovery operations. Amy Strecker, president of Duke Energy Foundation, stated, “These grants are an investment in the resilience of our communities.”
The funding will reach over 120 government agencies and nonprofits across six states. North Carolina and South Carolina will each receive $500,000; Indiana will get $330,000; Florida will receive $163,000; while Ohio & Kentucky are allocated $67,500 collectively. Additionally, all jurisdictions will see a $100,000 grant directed to the American Red Cross.
Rebecca Pittman from the American Red Cross highlighted the importance of strong partnerships during disasters: “With Duke Energy Foundation’s ongoing support, we can better deliver essential relief services.” Last year alone saw contributions exceeding $900,000 from Duke Energy to aid affected communities.
Over the past five years, more than $8 million has been granted by Duke Energy Foundation across several states for emergency preparedness efforts. This initiative further strengthens its collaboration with the American Red Cross with combined support totaling over $2.5 million in recent years.
Duke Energy continues working towards a smarter energy future by investing in grid upgrades and cleaner generation methods such as natural gas and renewables.
