Duke Energy has restored power to over 73,000 customers in Indiana following severe storms that caused significant outages. The storms affected more than 100,000 customers across nearly all of the company’s 28 districts. As of early this morning, around 31,000 customers were still without power.
Efforts to restore power involve a range of personnel including technicians and tree trimmers. Wind gusts reaching up to 70 miles per hour resulted in downed trees and power lines. To address the situation, Duke Energy has deployed over 500 additional crew members to assist in the most impacted areas such as Bartholomew, Hamilton, Monroe, Union, and Vigo counties.
Estimated restoration times will be updated on Duke Energy’s website and communicated via text alerts for registered customers. Clint Carnahan, general manager of emergency preparedness at Duke Energy stated: “I want to thank our customers for their patience and understanding as our crews work quickly and safely to restore power.”
The restoration process prioritizes repairing large infrastructure first to restore service to the maximum number of people efficiently. Essential services like hospitals are also prioritized before addressing individual neighborhoods.
Customers can report outages through various channels including the company’s website, mobile app, or by texting OUT to a designated number.
Duke Energy Indiana serves approximately 920,000 customers with about 6,300 megawatts of electric capacity across a large service area. The parent company is one of America’s largest energy holding companies with extensive operations across several states.
