Duke Energy has successfully restored power to nearly 100,000 customers in Indiana following severe storms that hit the region on Wednesday. The storms, which brought wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, led to widespread outages affecting almost all of the 28 districts served by Duke Energy in Indiana. As of 4 p.m. ET, around 16,800 customers remain without power.
“We’ve made a lot of progress, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us,” said Clint Carnahan, general manager of emergency preparedness at Duke Energy. “The widespread nature of this storm, which affected nearly all of the 28 Indiana districts we serve, has made power restoration especially challenging. We have a workforce of approximately 1,000 in the field responding. We appreciate our customers’ patience as we finish the job.”
Duke Energy expects most remaining outages in regions including Attica, Aurora, Carmel, Clinton, and others to be resolved by midnight tonight. Some areas like Avon/Plainfield and Greencastle are expected to have power restored by noon Friday. Other areas such as Bedford and Bloomington are projected to regain service by 6 p.m. Friday.
Customers with significant property damage or flooding may face extended restoration times.
The company prioritizes repairing large infrastructure and essential services before addressing individual neighborhoods and homes during its power restoration process.
For outage updates and estimated restoration times, Duke Energy directs customers to their interactive outage map available online. Customers can also report outages via text message or through the company’s mobile app.
Duke Energy Indiana serves approximately 920,000 customers across a vast service area with about 6,300 megawatts of electric capacity. The parent company is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., and is among America’s largest energy holding companies.
