As temperatures rise, Duke Energy is urging customers in North Carolina and South Carolina to reduce their energy use during peak demand hours today, June 23, from 3-8 p.m. This measure aims to ease the pressure on the power grid and minimize the risk of isolated power outages.

Duke Energy suggests several methods for reducing electricity usage at home. Customers are encouraged to raise their thermostat settings to the highest comfortable level, delay laundry until later in the evening or the next morning, and avoid prolonged use of electric ranges or ovens. Other recommendations include avoiding appliances like washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers during peak hours and considering outdoor grilling to lower indoor temperatures. Additionally, turning off unnecessary appliances and lights can contribute to energy savings.

“We deeply appreciate our customers’ cooperation, patience and understanding as we work to help ensure the stability and reliability of the system,” said Ben Harrison, Duke Energy vice president of grid operations – planning and operations. “We understand that reducing electricity use during these hours can be inconvenient, but our customers’ actions make a significant difference for all.”

Duke Energy is one of America’s largest energy holding companies with its headquarters in Charlotte, N.C. The company serves 8.6 million electric utility customers across six states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.
