Family honors late grower at annual state farmers market watermelon contest

The annual Largest Watermelon Contest at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh was dedicated this year to Donald Murphy, a longtime participant who died earlier in 2025. Murphy was known for his expertise in growing large watermelons and had been a regular competitor for more than three decades.

Murphy’s sons entered a watermelon their father had started growing before his death, continuing the family tradition. “Seeing his sons and family at Watermelon Day to carry on their tradition is a reminder of how strong North Carolina farm families are,” said Monica Wood, manager of the State Farmers Market. “We are proud to honor his legacy with this year’s largest watermelon contest.”

Rodney Register of Nakina won first place with a 222.5-pound melon. Donald Murphy of Pink Hill placed second with a 179.1-pound entry, while Leighton Murphy took third with a 161.7-pound melon. John Bass from Fairmont earned fourth place with a 160.8-pound watermelon, and Cephus Ray of Bailey received an honorable mention.

The contest also included the presentation of “The Donald Murphy Future Growers Award” to Knox Basden, great-grandson of the late Donald Murphy.

Each summer, the Largest Watermelon Contest takes place during Watermelon Day at the State Farmers Market as part of efforts to highlight North Carolina’s watermelon growers and mark peak season for the fruit. The winning watermelon is currently displayed at the State Farmers Market Restaurant.

The State Farmers Market operates throughout the year, providing local produce, meats, cheeses, specialty foods, as well as seasonal items from area nurseries and farms. It is located off Exit 297 on Interstate 40 in Raleigh and welcomes shoppers daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., offering updates on events through its website and Facebook page.
