Governor Josh Stein attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Genentech’s new manufacturing facility in Holly Springs, joining business leaders and elected officials. The event marked Genentech’s first manufacturing site on the East Coast.
“North Carolina has earned its reputation as the best state for business, and Genentech’s decision to put down roots in Holly Springs is further proof of our leadership in the biotech sector,” said Governor Josh Stein. “From our top-tier research universities to our world-class workforce, North Carolina has exactly what companies need to succeed. I am pleased to welcome Genentech to Holly Springs as it expands its manufacturing operations to the East Coast.”
The life sciences sector in North Carolina employs over 225,000 people and contributes $88.3 billion annually to the state’s economy. The new $700 million Genentech facility is expected to create more than 1,500 construction jobs during development and over 400 high-wage manufacturing positions once operational. It will also provide opportunities for local suppliers and small businesses.
North Carolina was recently ranked by CNBC as the Top State for Business due to its favorable business environment and strong workforce (https://www.cnbc.com/2024/07/11/north-carolina-is-americas-top-state-for-business-in-2024.html). To support economic growth, Governor Stein established the Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships, which released its first report in June. The council aims to expand access to well-paying jobs through investment in apprenticeship programs and technical education while ensuring every student has a post-secondary pathway.
Since January, Governor Stein has announced more than $19 billion in new investments and over 25,000 new jobs across North Carolina.
