Raleigh Parks has introduced a unique method to manage overgrown brush and weeds at Dix Park. Instead of using traditional heavy equipment or hiring costly crews, the department has opted for an environmentally friendly solution by employing a herd of goats.

The goats, rented from a local company, are tasked with clearing more than an acre of land over ten days. This approach allows them to access areas that mowers cannot reach, effectively tackling invasive species like kudzu.

A spokesperson from Raleigh Parks commented on this initiative: “When Raleigh Parks was looking to get rid of overgrown brush and weeds, staff decided to get creative.” The use of goats in landscaping is relatively new for the city, but it offers an innovative alternative to conventional methods.

The herd consists of 32 goats who spend their workdays grazing on the vegetation. The decision reflects a growing trend towards sustainable practices in urban park management.
