Today, Governor Stein issued a statement following the adjournment of the General Assembly without passing a budget. The governor expressed disappointment over the legislature’s inability to address critical needs before the start of the new budget year.

“The Senate and the House failed to come together to meet the needs of North Carolinians before the start of the new budget year,” said Governor Stein. He acknowledged that while progress was made in allocating more Helene funding, numerous urgent challenges remain unaddressed. These include providing substantial pay raises for teachers, law enforcement, and other state employees to aid in recruitment and retention.

Governor Stein also highlighted concerns regarding potential federal cuts to Medicaid. “At a time when the federal government is proposing severe cuts to Medicaid, leaving Raleigh without taking steps to fully fund North Carolina’s Medicaid program is irresponsible,” he stated.

The governor reiterated his willingness to collaborate with the General Assembly on investments aimed at expanding opportunities for all residents of North Carolina. “I stand ready to work with the General Assembly to invest in our people and expand opportunities so every person can succeed,” he concluded.
