Governor Josh Stein has declared a State of Emergency as North Carolina prepares for Hurricane Erin. The state is mobilizing resources and personnel to assist coastal areas ahead of the storm’s arrival. Governor Stein will provide further updates at a media briefing scheduled for Wednesday, August 20, at 10:15 a.m.

“Hurricane Erin will bring threats of coastal flooding, beach erosion, and dangerous surf conditions,” said Governor Josh Stein. “North Carolinians along the coast should get prepared now, ensure their emergency kit is ready, and listen to local emergency guidelines and alerts in the event they need to evacuate.”

Local emergencies have also been declared in Dare County and Hyde County. Mandatory evacuations are underway for Ocracoke and Hatteras islands. Evacuated residents can seek shelter at the State Operated Disaster Shelter in Warrenton, NC, which allows pets.

Forecasters expect Hurricane Erin to grow stronger over the next two days as it moves northward. Predictions include significant beach erosion with waves reaching 15 to 20 feet, coastal flooding that could affect roads and buildings, and dangerous rip currents throughout the week. Tropical storm force winds are likely on Wednesday and Thursday along the coast, especially in the Outer Banks.

Residents are urged to finalize preparations now. Officials recommend staying informed through reliable sources such as the National Weather Service or local agencies. People should follow evacuation orders from local authorities for safety.

Those evacuating are advised to bring disaster kits containing important documents, cash, prescriptions, phone chargers, and insurance policies. Residents should also plan their evacuation routes by visiting KnowYourZone.NC.Gov.

Officials warn against driving through floodwaters due to past fatalities associated with flooded roadways; up-to-date travel information is available at DriveNC.Gov.

Further details from the State Emergency Response Team can be found at ReadyNC.Gov/Erin. Additional preparedness tips are accessible online as well as Executive Order 20 outlining the State of Emergency declaration and temporary suspension of certain motor vehicle regulations.
