Governor Josh Stein visited W.A. Pattillo Middle School in Tarboro today to deliver school supplies collected during the annual Governor’s School Supply Drive. The event brought together educators, students, and local officials as part of an ongoing effort to support North Carolina classrooms.
During the visit, Governor Stein addressed the financial challenges faced by teachers across the state. “As teachers prepare for a new school year, they are reaching into their own pockets to ensure their classrooms are well-equipped,” said Governor Josh Stein. “This school supply drive is a way we can all help to lighten their load. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this worthy cause. We must continue to work together to support our teachers and students with meaningful investments and support.”
North Carolina ranks second in the nation for out-of-pocket spending by teachers on classroom supplies. In response, Governor Stein’s 2025-2027 budget proposal includes several measures aimed at supporting public schools and educators, such as a $300 stipend for school supplies, pay raises for teachers, and reinstating master’s pay.
The Governor urged the General Assembly to pass a comprehensive state budget that prioritizes investment in public education.
The Office of the Governor has collaborated with organizations including the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU), Communities in Schools of North Carolina, NCPTA, and Boys and Girls Club of North Carolina for several years to collect donations for local classrooms. SECU branches provided donation boxes at locations statewide while encouraging customers to participate. The Office of the Governor and cabinet agencies also took part in collecting contributions. This year’s supply drive ran from June 30 through August 1.
