Construction has recently been completed for two new High-Intensity Activated CrossWalk (HAWK) signals on Avent Ferry Road, providing safer pedestrian access to busy bus stops and recreational trails. These new crosswalks, also known as Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons, are located near Brigadoon Drive and Centennial View Lane.

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), HAWK signals have proven to be effective in reducing pedestrian crashes by 55%. To use these new devices, pedestrians and cyclists simply need to press the button to activate the signal, which will then stop traffic. Once the drivers see a solid red light, a walk signal is displayed, indicating that it is safe for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the street.

The project to install these HAWK signals was funded through the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Spot Safety program and was designed and built by NCDOT. The initiative was a collaborative effort between the Raleigh’s Vision Zero Team and NCDOT, aiming to identify the need for safer crossings and deliver a practical solution.

Raleigh’s Vision Zero program is dedicated to enhancing the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists in the city. Through initiatives like the installation of HAWK signals, the program is striving to create a safer environment for all modes of transportation.

As one resident noted, “These new HAWK signals will greatly improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in this area. It’s reassuring to know that measures are being taken to protect those who rely on these busy bus stops and trails.”

The addition of these HAWK signals on Avent Ferry Road is a significant step towards achieving the Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries in Raleigh. By implementing innovative solutions like these, the city is paving the way for a safer and more accessible transportation network.

To learn more about how HAWK signals work and their benefits, interested individuals can visit the NCDOT’s website for detailed information.

In conclusion, the installation of the new HAWK signals on Avent Ferry Road near Brigadoon Drive and Centennial View Lane provides a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists accessing busy bus stops and recreational trails. This project, funded through NCDOT’s Spot Safety program and implemented in collaboration with Raleigh’s Vision Zero Team, demonstrates the commitment to improving safety and accessibility in the city.
