The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Apr. 10 that defenseman Jaccob Slavin has been named the team’s nominee for the 2025-26 King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

The award is given each year to a player who demonstrates leadership on and off the ice and makes significant humanitarian contributions in his community. Nominees are selected by their teams, with the winner chosen by a committee of senior National Hockey League executives.

Slavin, age 31, has recorded seven points and a plus-6 rating in 38 games this season. He set a franchise record for most career overtime goals by a defenseman with his fourth overtime winner on April 7 against Boston. Slavin also represented the United States at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, where he won a gold medal. He was originally drafted by Carolina in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft and is a two-time recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and ability.

Inspired by his faith, Slavin has used his platform to support various causes. Together with his wife Kylie, he launched “Fight For Freedom” with International Justice Mission to raise $1 million to protect vulnerable communities from violence and modern slavery. The couple also pledged $500,000 toward Compassion International’s “The Fight for First” campaign supporting mothers and babies in need. In Raleigh, they have worked with local organizations such as Raleigh Dream Center and Raleigh Rescue Mission to provide school supplies for children each year, as well as helping distribute holiday meals through the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation.

According to the official website, other notable players like Eric Staal and Rod Brind’Amour have been recognized in the Hurricanes Hall of Fame for their contributions to hockey and community service. The team achieved its most significant milestone when it won the Stanley Cup in 2006 according to official records.

The Lenovo Center serves as home arena for the Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina; it features over 700,000 square feet including multiple seating levels, suites, concession stands and can accommodate up to 20,000 people while hosting more than 150 events annually according to venue information. The organization contributes over $200 million annually to the local economy through its events and engagement activities as reported by venue sources.
