The J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center (JIRDC) will hold its 49th annual holiday parade on Thursday, December 4, 2025, starting at 3 p.m. The event, themed “Storybook Holiday Parade,” is open to the community and will feature marching bands, fire trucks, floats, and an appearance by Santa Claus.
This year’s Grand Marshal is Kyle Petty, known for his career as a NASCAR driver and racing analyst. Petty also works as an author and musician. He provides race coverage for NBC and hosts programs such as “Dinner Drive with Kyle Petty.” In addition to his media work, he leads the nonprofit Victory Junction, which offers camping experiences for children with chronic illnesses in North Carolina. Petty is the son of Richard “The King” Petty, a NASCAR Cup Champion and Hall of Famer.
“Kyle Petty, Grand Marshal of the JIRDC 49th Annual Holiday ParadeJIRDC has designated a ‘Quiet Zone’ for guests, including individuals with disabilities and anyone who may be sensitive to loud sounds. This area will be clearly marked with lime green tape to help visitors easily identify it. The ‘Quiet Zone’ will be located just past the circle drive, between the Ninja Turtles and 101 Dalmatian displays. Thank you for joining us in making this space a welcoming and peaceful spot for everyone.”
Following the parade, holiday light displays on campus will be illuminated daily from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., continuing through December 31.
Parade organizers have announced several measures to ensure accessibility and safety during the event. One-way traffic around Perimeter Road begins at noon; staff will direct visitors to parking areas while marking both handicapped spaces and no-parking zones. All attendees are asked to follow instructions from traffic control personnel.
The center’s second entrance closes at noon; non-emergency vehicles cannot use the front entrance after 2:30 p.m. Participants in the parade will receive specific directions upon arrival regarding their placement on campus. Roadside parking along Enola Road is prohibited due to ongoing construction at JIRDC that limits available parking spaces.
Parents are reminded not to drop off young children without adult supervision and should arrange meeting points following the parade.
Those interested in participating can email jirdc.parade@dhhs.nc.gov for more information.
“JIRDC reserves the right to cancel the parade based on the safety and well-being of the residents we serve.”
The J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center operates under North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities as a state-run institution serving people with intellectual disabilities.
