The Five Points Center for Active Adults is set to host an LGBTQIA+ Film Series screening on Tuesday, January 28. This monthly event, co-hosted with the Carolina Aging Alliance, focuses on films exploring diverse themes around sexuality and gender.

January’s feature is “Longtime Companion,” a film that delves into the impact of AIDS from its initial mention in the New York Times in 1981. The narrative follows a group of friends as they confront the disease initially labeled as “Gay-Related-Immune-Disorder.” Set between Manhattan and Fire Island, the story highlights how AIDS profoundly affected lives during that era.

The film’s title reflects the New York Times’ past practice of referring to survivors in homosexual relationships as “Longtime Companions” instead of acknowledging them explicitly in obituaries.

This event welcomes individuals aged 18 and older. Admission is free, and attendees are encouraged to register via RecLink.
