The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management, in collaboration with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, is urging visitors to Masonboro Island Reserve to act responsibly during the July Fourth holiday. The island is a research reserve and dedicated state nature preserve.
Tancred Miller, director of the N.C. Division of Coastal Management, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “We’re grateful for our ongoing collaboration with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, which helps ensure the safety of visitors to the Masonboro Island Reserve.” He added that visitors should respect the natural habitat by practicing responsible recreation and leaving no trace.
Visitors are reminded not to attempt swimming across Masonboro Inlet due to its dangers and are encouraged to make decisions that minimize their impact on natural resources. There are no facilities or resources available on-site, so it is advised that potential visitors review guidelines and safety information before arriving.
Preparedness is essential for visitor safety. It is recommended that individuals carry proper supplies, use reliable transportation, pack out all trash, and consider both their own safety and that of other visitors.
The North Carolina Division of Coastal Management aims to protect coastal resources across 20 counties. The N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve Program has preserved over 44,000 acres at 10 sites since its inception in 1989.
