The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) is set to participate in the National Black Bear Festival as part of NC S.A.F.E.’s third annual Week of Action. The event will take place on the banks of the Roanoke River in Plymouth, NC, from Friday, June 6, through Saturday, June 7.

NC S.A.F.E., which stands for Secure All Firearms Effectively, was launched by NCDPS in response to a concerning rise in firearm-related deaths among children and youths and an increase in firearm theft. The initiative aims to promote awareness about the importance of safe firearm storage.

“Firearms are now the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina,” according to NC S.A.F.E. The program emphasizes that “taking simple steps, like locking your weapons, can make communities safer and avoid preventable tragedies.”

During the festival, NC S.A.F.E. will distribute free gun locks and informational materials to attendees. This effort is part of a broader strategy to educate North Carolinians on effective gun safety practices.

The media is encouraged to reach out with questions or requests for interviews regarding this event. A comprehensive media kit is available that includes prerecorded video responses to frequently asked questions, key facts and statistics, and other resources.

For more information on how North Carolinians can safely secure their firearms, resources are available through NC S.A.F.E., which was established in 2023. The initiative focuses solely on promoting safe storage practices without engaging in advocacy related to gun laws or regulations.
