During the third annual Week of Action, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) will participate in two events in Cumberland County. The NCDPS will attend a Jeep Event Fun Fair hosted by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office nonprofit Shop with a Sheriff Foundation and a gun show at Crown Expo Center in Fayetteville. NC S.A.F.E., an initiative by NCDPS, will be present at both events to distribute free gun locks and educational materials to the community.

NC S.A.F.E., which stands for Secure All Firearms Effectively, was launched by NCDPS to address the rising number of firearm-related injuries and deaths among children and youths in North Carolina. The initiative aims to raise awareness about safe firearm storage practices. “Firearms are now the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina,” stated an official from NC S.A.F.E.

This July marks two years since a Fayetteville father lost his daughter Jenesis due to an unsecured gun in someone else’s home. NC S.A.F.E. emphasizes that simple actions, such as locking firearms, can prevent such tragedies and make communities safer.

The media is invited to contact NCDPS for questions or interview requests regarding these events. A full NC S.A.F.E. media kit is available, which includes prerecorded video responses, key facts, statistics, and other resources for journalists.

North Carolinians seeking more information on safely securing firearms can find resources provided by NC S.A.F.E., which was established in 2023 to promote best practices for firearm safety without engaging in advocacy related to gun laws or regulations.
