The Five Points intersection in Raleigh, North Carolina, has long been a spot of concern due to a history of run-off-road crashes. Located at the meeting point of Glenwood Avenue, Whitaker Mill Road, Fairview Road, and Glenn Avenue, this unique intersection has seen its fair share of accidents, with some even proving fatal.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Raleigh’s Vision Zero Team, in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), took action to address the crash pattern and find a solution. In 2022, the NCDOT’s Spot Safety Program allocated funds for a project aimed at improving safety at Five Points.
The project focused on implementing low-cost but high-impact improvements to enhance driver awareness and pedestrian safety. One of the key additions included the installation of flashing chevron signs, serving as a visual reminder for drivers that Glenwood Avenue curves through the intersection. Additionally, a new speed feedback sign was put in place to inform drivers if they were exceeding the appropriate speed limit.
In terms of pedestrian safety, signal upgrades were made to the intersection. One notable improvement is the introduction of Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPI), which grant pedestrians a head start before adjacent drivers receive a green light. This innovative measure ensures that pedestrians have ample time to cross the street safely.
Since the implementation of these improvements, the Five Points intersection has witnessed a significant positive change. The annual rate of run-off-road crashes has decreased by an impressive 60%. These statistics demonstrate the effectiveness of the measures taken by the Vision Zero Team and NCDOT to make the intersection safer for everyone.
While the recent improvements have made a substantial difference, it is essential for the community to remain vigilant in order to sustain this positive trend. Staying alert and wearing seatbelts are simple yet crucial actions that can contribute to ensuring the safety of all road users.
In light of the successful outcome of the Five Points street improvements, it is evident that strategic collaborations between local government agencies and community initiatives can yield significant results in enhancing road safety. This project serves as a model for other areas facing similar challenges, highlighting the importance of proactive measures and investment in infrastructure to protect lives and prevent accidents.
As the community continues to benefit from these improvements, it is crucial for drivers and pedestrians alike to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic regulations. By doing so, we can collectively contribute to a safer and more secure road environment.
