The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) is scheduled to hold its regular business meeting on August 27 and 28 at the Tryon Palace – History Center in New Bern. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on August 27 and continue at 9 a.m. on August 28. Members of the public are invited to attend either in person or online.

A public input and comment period is set for 3:00 p.m. on August 27, with each speaker allotted up to three minutes at the chair’s discretion. The CRC meeting will also be available via livestream on the Department of Environmental Quality’s YouTube channel.

The Coastal Resources Advisory Council will not meet in August.

Agenda items for the first day include consideration of variance requests related to artificial turf within a buffer in Carolina Beach and a covered deck within a buffer in Frisco. The commission will also review existing rules, consider adopting new rules regarding urban waterfronts, Jockey’s Ridge Area of Environmental Concern (AEC), and use standards for ocean hazard area exceptions. Additional topics include fiscal analysis approval for general permits concerning bridge and culvert replacement, approval of the Bogue Banks Beach Management Plan, and a proposed closed session regarding ongoing litigation.

On August 28, the agenda features periodic review of rules related to the North Carolina Coastal Reserve, updates from the annual review of rules, an overview of inlet hazard area boundaries along with a science panel report, consideration of approval for oceanfront and inlet erosion rates and setback factors, as well as updates on litigation relevant to the commission.
