North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has declared November 10-15 as “Employ A Veteran Week,” with a series of events planned across the state to help veterans connect with employment opportunities and support services.
“Veterans and their families bring invaluable skills and experience to North Carolina and to all kinds of organizations,” said Governor Josh Stein. “As we strive to be America’s most military-friendly state, we are committed to supporting veterans’ transition to good jobs in the civilian workforce and find new ways to serve.”
N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the importance of veterans in the state’s economy. “North Carolina is America’s top state for business because of our workforce, which is strengthened by the talent found among our veterans,” said Lilley. “Our NCWorks Career Centers are proud to help veterans, transitioning servicemembers, and military spouses connect with top employers.”
Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette, Secretary of the N.C. Department of Military & Veterans Affairs, highlighted the qualities veterans bring: “Hiring a veteran is more than filling a position; it’s strengthening the foundation of our workforce and our communities. Across North Carolina, veterans bring leadership, discipline, and an unwavering sense of purpose to every mission they take on. They know how to solve problems under pressure, adapt quickly, and lead teams with integrity. Those qualities don’t fade when the uniform comes off; they continue to serve our state’s businesses, schools, and communities every day,” she said. “When North Carolina invests in its veterans, we don’t just honor their service; we strengthen our economy, our families, and our future.”
Throughout Employ A Veteran Week, local NCWorks Career Centers will host job fairs, workshops on federal hiring processes and salary negotiation, resource fairs for transitioning service members and military spouses, as well as events focused on generational wealth building for veterans. Events are scheduled in counties including Iredell, Cleveland, Gaston, Onslow, McDowell, Burke, Moore, Union, Craven, Wake, Rowan, Wilkes, Pasquotank (Elizabeth City), Charlotte (Mecklenburg), Catawba (Conover), Randolph (Asheboro), Lincoln (Lincolnton), Caldwell (Lenoir), Guilford (Greensboro), Buncombe (Asheville), Cabarrus (Concord) and others.
NCWorks Veterans Services professionals—who are themselves all veterans—work throughout North Carolina at local career centers helping former service members find jobs or training programs that fit their skills. These professionals also assist employers seeking veteran talent and participate in initiatives such as Veterans Treatment Courts in some regions.
The N.C. Department of Commerce partners closely with organizations like North Carolina For Military Employment (NC4ME) for special hiring events designed specifically for veterans.
Contact details for each career center can be found at www.NCWorks.gov. Both jobseekers who are veterans and employers can use resources available through the NCWorks Veterans Portal at https://veterans.ncworks.gov/. The portal includes information about companies recognized with federal HIRE Vets medallion awards so that users can identify current job openings from those employers.
Funding for NCWorks Veterans Services comes entirely from the Jobs for Veterans State Grant provided by the U.S. Department of Labor as part of an award totaling $5.6 million.
