The Office of the State Controller released on April 27 the General Fund Cash Watch numbers for the week ending April 24, 2026. The report provides a weekly update on the cash position of North Carolina’s General Fund.
The release is important because it offers transparency about how state funds are managed and allocated each week. This information allows state agencies, employees, and members of the public to track financial activity and understand how resources are reserved or spent.
According to the summary table in the report, North Carolina began the week with $9,308,409,311.10 in cash on April 17. During that period, total receipts amounted to $4,847,130,704.87 while disbursements were $1,622,855,195.77. By April 24, ending cash stood at $12,532,684,820.20 with total reserved cash at $7,908,605,589.90 and an unreserved balance of $4,624,079,230.30.
The receipts included tax and non-tax income totaling over $4 billion as well as other receipts above $821 million; there were no coronavirus relief receipts during this period. Disbursements covered payroll ($634 million), state aid ($34 million), Medicaid and other provider payments ($136 million), tax refunds/distributions ($225 million), and general operating expenses ($592 million). No debt service or coronavirus-related transfers were reported for this week.
Reserved funds include amounts set aside for sales and use tax payable to local governments (over $1.3 billion), economic development projects (about $702 million), information technology reserves (about $271 million), Medicaid contingency reserve ($500 million), opioid abatement reserve (about $59 million), savings reserve (over $3.6 billion) among others.
