The City of Raleigh held a groundbreaking ceremony on Apr. 24 for the construction of 25 new affordable homes in Southeast Raleigh. The project will be built across nine city-owned lots and aims to increase housing options for residents where they already live and work.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address housing affordability in Raleigh, which remains a significant issue as the city continues to grow. The new development reflects a partnership with Southeast Raleigh Promise, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating purpose-built communities in the area.
City Council supported the project by providing $3.3 million in gap financing and leveraging public land, ensuring that these homes remain affordable for at least 75 years. The homes will include various types such as duplexes and accessory dwelling units, targeting households earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income—ranging from $39,800 to $104,200 for a family of four.
Located near employment opportunities and essential services, these residences are designed to integrate into existing neighborhoods while maintaining their character. This approach aligns with Raleigh’s Affordable Housing Plan, which seeks to expand housing choices and keep living costs manageable for more residents.
Raleigh operates under an elected city council structure supported by a city manager who oversees operations according to the official website. The city also manages its budget and shapes policy through its manager’s office as reported by the official website. Recent changes have included updates such as adjustments to election terms via local ordinances according to the official website.
In addition to its focus on housing policy, Raleigh contributes broadly to community life through amenities like professional sports teams including the Carolina Hurricanes according to the official website.
With projects like this new development in Southeast Raleigh, officials say they are working toward solving what they call “the affordable housing puzzle” one step at a time.
