The City of Raleigh has completed a series of safety enhancements near Wildwood Forest Elementary School. The initiative aimed to improve pedestrian safety for students, families, and local residents. The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP) and the Vision Zero group collaborated on this project.

The improvements included the installation of missing sidewalk sections to ensure smoother and more connected paths to the school. Crosswalks were upgraded, and curb ramps were modified to comply with ADA standards.

Two new all-way stops have been installed at Filbin Creek Drive and Wild Wood Forest Drive, as well as at Neuse Wood Drive and Wild Wood Forest Drive. These stops are intended to slow down traffic, providing safer crossing opportunities for pedestrians.

Additional measures taken include extending the sidewalk at Sand Bar Drive and Wild Wood Forest Drive. Bright crosswalks were introduced to enhance visibility for drivers. A pedestrian island was added in the middle of the road to offer a safe stopping point while crossing, particularly during busy school hours. New signage encourages drivers to reduce speed and remain vigilant for pedestrians.

These changes aim to increase safety for families walking to school while fostering a sense of community by making the area more accessible.

This project aligns with Raleigh’s Vision Zero goal—eliminating deadly and serious traffic accidents by improving street safety for everyone.
