A new recycling initiative in Raleigh is introducing innovative waste management solutions. The MyMatR unit, a smart recycling bin, aims to educate residents on proper waste disposal. Unlike traditional bins, these units provide immediate feedback on whether an item has been placed correctly and automatically sort the waste.

The units also collect data on discarded items’ frequency and location. This information will be used to enhance waste collection efficiency and inform educational programs about common recycling mistakes.

The City of Raleigh has deployed two MyMatR units as part of a Smart Raleigh pilot project. One unit is located at Barwell Community Center, and the other at Raleigh Founded on North Street. “The goal is to test the use of these devices to better sort waste and recyclable materials,” said John Holden, Smart City Manager. The project aims to gather data on usage patterns for potential future deployment.

These smart bins are part of a larger effort to increase public awareness about environmental impacts and encourage small actions that collectively make a significant difference.

For those interested in learning more from home, the Raleigh Reuse App offers features such as recycling reminders, disposal instructions, and information on nearby donation options.
