This October, Raleigh will host two themed paddling events at its city parks, inviting residents to participate in costume-friendly outings on local lakes.
The first event, “Witches on the Water,” is scheduled for October 18 at Lake Wheeler Park. Participants are encouraged to dress in witch-themed attire and bring their own stand-up paddleboard (SUP), kayak, or canoe. The event welcomes all expressions of witchery and is open to all genders. Young participants aged 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees should arrive before 2 p.m. to prepare for a group photo and a self-guided paddle beginning at 2:15 p.m., with the option to remain on the water until 5 p.m. Those who reserve paddle craft must return them by 5 p.m., and all watercraft should be off the lake by 6 p.m. The fee is $5 for personal launches and $15 for reserved kayaks or SUPs. Personal flotation devices (PFDs) are required for all participants.
Organizers remind attendees to secure costumes and accessories to avoid littering in the lake, and note that park gates close at 7 p.m.
The second event, “Haunted Halloween Paddling Tour,” will take place at Lake Johnson Park on October 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Guided by staff, participants will hear ghost stories from Raleigh’s history as well as tales inspired by the park’s secluded coves while learning about nocturnal wildlife and natural history. Costumes are encouraged if they are safe for paddling, with a contest and prize for best dressed at the end of the tour. All equipment is provided, and minors under age 16 must register with an adult. The cost is $25 for Raleigh residents and $40 for non-residents.
Both events require advance registration through RecLink.
“Don your witchy regalia and load up your SUP, kayak, or canoe for a cackling good time! Pointy hats and cloaks are strongly encouraged, but any expression and interpretation of witchery are welcome. This event is for all genders of witches. Young witches between ages 10-16 must be accompanied by an adult. Please arrive before 2 p.m. to launch and to gather on the water by 2:15 p.m. for a photo and self-guided, leisurely, magical paddle around the lake.”
“Explore Lake Johnson by moonlight (or late afternoon into dusk) with an experienced guide. Participants will enjoy a relaxed paddle while hearing haunted legends from Raleigh’s history and spooky tales inspired by the park’s own secluded coves.”
