Officer Walker of the Raleigh Police Department was recognized for his work at Athens Drive Magnet High School during a ceremony held on February 11. The event, organized in partnership with Wake County Public School System Communications, took place at the school’s main entrance before lunch and included school leaders, students, and police representatives.

Officer Walker serves as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Athens Drive Magnet High School. His responsibilities go beyond safety and security; he acts as a mentor and trusted adult for students. He is present throughout the campus, offering guidance and supporting school initiatives.

Heidi Lawrence from Wake County Public Schools commented on the significance of Officer Walker’s role: “It is an absolutely tremendous honor to be a part of this and honor what an SRO does each and every day. His impact is enormous, and these students get to see that each and every day.”

The recognition reflects ongoing collaboration between the Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Public Schools. Both organizations aim to support student safety, mentorship, and positive engagement.

RPD Major E. Goodwin said, “We are very pleased to share Officer Walker with Athens Drive High School. Every positive interaction he has with students strengthens the department’s relationship with the future leaders of this city.”

Officer Walker expressed his surprise at the recognition: “When I walked into the room and saw all the kids I’ve come to know over the years, it was truly shocking. I’m not just an officer to them; I’m someone they can trust and turn to whenever they have problems. That’s an incredibly humbling feeling for me. I care about them, and today it’s clear that they care about me too,” said Walker.
