School of Medicine faculty receive new grants exceeding $100,000

Several faculty members at the School of Medicine (SOM) have recently received new competitive grants, each exceeding $100,000 in total award amount. The projects are set to begin in December 2025.

Jonathan Schisler was awarded a grant from Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. for his project titled “Evaluation of Kaempferol (KMP) in Transthyretin Amyloidosis Models.” The award totals $246,623 and the project will start on December 1, 2025.

Natasha Snider received $311,000 from AbbVie, Inc. for her research on a “Method for obtaining a high-resolution cryoEM structure of glial fibrillary acidic protein,” beginning December 10, 2025.

Patrick Brandt secured funding from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund with an award of $178,515. His project is called “Women and underrepresented genders in STEM promoting inclusion in research experiences (WinSPIRE) Targeted Research Initiatives at UNC” and starts on December 1, 2025.

Mark Shen obtained a grant from the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF) for his study on “Pre-symptomatic Biomarkers of Rett Syndrome in Children with MECP2 mutations.” This project has been awarded $166,932 and will also commence on December 1, 2025.
