State coastal commission schedules New Bern meeting with agenda focused on rule changes

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission (CRC) will hold its regular business meeting on August 27 and 28 at the Tryon Palace – History Center in New Bern. The session will begin at 1:30 p.m. on August 27 and resume at 9 a.m. the following day. Members of the public are invited to attend either in person or online.

A public input and comment period is scheduled for August 27 at 3:00 p.m., with each speaker limited to three minutes at the chair’s discretion. “The public may attend the CRC meeting in person or join online.”

Due to technical difficulties, the recording of the August 27 livestream will be posted later on the CRC website rather than being available live.

Agenda items for August 27 include consideration of variance requests from petitioners regarding artificial turf and covered deck installations within buffer zones, periodic review of existing rules, adoption of several rule amendments related to urban waterfronts, Jockey’s Ridge Area of Environmental Concern (AEC), use standards for ocean hazard areas exceptions, approval of fiscal analysis for general permits concerning replacement of bridges and culverts, approval of the Bogue Banks Beach Management Plan, and a proposed closed session related to litigation.

On August 28, topics will include periodic review of rules governing the North Carolina Coastal Reserve, updates from an annual review of rules, an overview and science panel report on inlet hazard area boundaries, consideration for approval of oceanfront and inlet erosion rates as well as setback factors, and an update on litigation relevant to the commission.

Meeting materials and presentations are available through the CRC website. The Coastal Resources Advisory Council will not meet in August.
