The Glenwood South area is set to receive enhancements to its scooter parking corrals, which were initially launched as a pilot program in October 2021. This initiative led to high compliance rates for Lime and Spin scooter trips, with most rides concluding in designated corral areas during the pilot phase that lasted until June 2022. The success of this trial was attributed to the use of geofencing technology, in-app parking guidance, and financial penalties for improper parking.
The upcoming upgrades aim to build on this success by maintaining geofencing technology while introducing additional features such as parking signage, wheel stops, and vibrant painted designs. These improvements are designed to make the parking spots more visible. Research indicates that combining clear markings with smart technology enhances parking compliance. Additionally, some corrals will include bike racks for cyclists.
The project addresses poor scooter parking by utilizing spaces where regular parking is prohibited—such as near fire hydrants and intersections—to improve safety and visibility. Inspired by New York City’s Asphalt Art projects, the initiative will test new materials and designs while experimenting with various colors and materials.
Transportation staff anticipate completing upgrades to all 13 corrals by the end of this year. They express confidence that these updates will enhance the experience for both residents and visitors. Feedback from the community is encouraged throughout the process, with formal opportunities planned once installations are complete.
