The Department of Equity and Inclusion is organizing a Winter Series focused on the criminalization of African American girls in schools, inspired by the book "Pushout." This event aims to explore how young women of color are perceived within educational institutions. The series will take place over three weeks, offering participants an opportunity to engage in discussions and learn from the text.
The department invites teachers, administrators, justice system professionals, parents, and others interested in this topic to join the reading and discussion sessions. "Let's come together to explore, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue," reads their invitation.
Registration for the event opened on October 21st and will continue until November 1st. Participants who register before October 25th will receive a copy of the book while supplies last.
The meetings will be held in person at the Pathways Center located at 900 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh. Each week covers different chapters facilitated by various individuals:
- Week 1: On November 18th from 6 to 7 p.m., Aundrea White from Parks and Rec will facilitate Chapter 1: "Struggling to Survive," followed by Captain Renae Lockheart from RPD facilitating Chapter 2: "A Blues for Black Girls When the 'Attitude' Is Enu."
- Week 2: On December 2nd from 6 to 7 p.m., Mary Thompson, a community member, will lead Chapter 3: "Jezebel in the Classroom," with Briana Scurry from DEI facilitating Chapter 4: "Learning on Lockdown."
- Week 3: On December 9th from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Sophia Lindo from DEI will facilitate Chapter 5: "Repairing Relationships, Rebuilding Connections."
