The City of Raleigh's Information Technology Department is set to host the 2024 GIS Day on November 21 at Raleigh Union Station. The event, running from 8:30 a.m. to noon, aims to showcase how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are utilized by state and local governments. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning with GIS technologies.
This free event is open to the public and seeks to highlight the impact of GIS on communities. The agenda includes an opening at 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome address from City CIO Mark Wittenburg at 9 a.m., with various information tables and activities continuing until noon.
A key feature of this year's celebration is an original map competition, encouraging student participation. Eligible submissions must be original works that do not exceed 34” x 44” in size, printed horizontally, and submitted digitally in formats such as .pdf, .jpg, or .png. All entries must incorporate elements generated using GIS-based methods.
To enter the Map Contest, participants should complete a submission form by November 14 and bring printed maps to Raleigh Union Station on the day of the event. For printing assistance, individuals can contact gisday@raleighnc.gov. During the celebration, all eligible maps will be displayed, and attendees will vote for their favorite based on quality, content, and creativity.
The event also features tabling participants from various organizations demonstrating how GIS is applied in problem-solving across different sectors. Participating organizations include:
- 4-H Youth Development
- NC Department of Environmental Quality
- NC Department of Transportation
- NC Department of Health and Human Services
- NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis
- Several departments within Raleigh city government
- Wake County Community Services
