The City of Raleigh has implemented new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at a crosswalk on Buck Jones Road. The location is just north of I-40, near the intersection with South Valley Court.

This area sees significant pedestrian activity as people travel to a high school, a church, bus stops, and nearby neighborhoods. The installation aims to enhance pedestrian safety for those crossing Buck Jones Road.

Pedestrians can activate the RRFB by pressing a button that triggers flashing warning lights. These lights alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians waiting to cross. Once vehicles have stopped, pedestrians can safely make their way across the street.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, RRFBs are recommended as an effective safety measure. They have been shown to reduce pedestrian crash risks by about 50%.

The Signs and Pavement Markings group along with the Traffic Signals group were responsible for this installation, contributing to ongoing efforts to improve road safety in Raleigh.
