The Raleigh Fire Department (RFD) recently responded promptly to a request for assistance with smoke alarms. The call was made by Lanny Harer, who sought help for his friend, retired Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr., due to concerns about the absence of functioning smoke alarms in Manning's home.
"They were there in less than an hour after I called," Harer stated. His quick action and the RFD's response underscore the importance of having operational smoke alarms, which studies indicate can halve the risk of death from home fires.
Captain Chris Benvenuto, along with Senior Firefighter Brittany Rountree and Firefighter Andrew Martin, visited Manning's residence and installed three new smoke alarms. Benvenuto emphasized the critical role of properly installed and maintained smoke alarms in reducing fire-related deaths and injuries. "So helping residents with smoke alarms is a high priority for us," he said.
The smoke alarms provided by the RFD are designed to last up to 10 years using power cells instead of traditional batteries. In addition to installing the devices, the team gave Manning contact information for their home station, Fire Station 6, encouraging him to reach out if further assistance is needed.
Benvenuto also advised residents to check their smoke alarms whenever clocks are adjusted for daylight saving time changes.
Harer expressed gratitude for the department's swift response and dedication. "This was fantastic customer and community service," he remarked.
