In the first quarter of 2026, Tower Nursing and Rehabilitation Center emerged as the largest nursing facility in Wake County, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility offered 180 available beds, surpassing the Wake County average by 79 beds during the same period. On average, 87.8 residents received care there throughout the quarter.

Tower Nursing and Rehabilitation Center received an overall CMS rating of 2 out of 5, trailing the North Carolina average rating of 2.9 for nursing homes.

During the quarter, Raleigh Rehabilitation Center was the second largest in the county with 157 beds, followed closely by Pruitthealth-Raleigh, which provided 150 beds.

Through the first quarter of 2026, Tower Nursing and Rehabilitation Center incurred two fines totaling $15,593 and received two penalties.

Wake County contained 17 for-profit nursing facilities as of the same period.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the nation’s older adult population is increasing as younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the American population ages 65 and up grew by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The older segment has dramatically expanded over the past century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study found that nearly half this age group, or about 28 million, may need long-term services and supports. The study also projects that more than a third might one day require nursing facility care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
