Toyota has announced the arrival of the 2026 Prius, marking a quarter-century since the hybrid’s introduction to the U.S. market in 2000. The vehicle continues its legacy as a leader in hybrid technology with notable enhancements in performance and efficiency.
The 2026 Prius is offered in four trims: LE, XLE, Nightshade, and Limited. The model pairs the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS 5) with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, achieving up to 194 net combined horsepower for front-wheel-drive models and up to 196 for all-wheel-drive versions. The fuel economy remains impressive, with an estimated rating of up to 57 MPG combined for FWD models.
According to Toyota, “the Prius made its debut in the U.S. market in 2000,” becoming one of the first mass-produced hybrid vehicles. Its design and efficiency quickly made it popular among environmentally conscious consumers.
The latest iteration offers advanced technological features such as an available 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system on higher trims and standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 across all models. Additionally, electronic on-demand all-wheel drive is available for added traction.
“Today, as it celebrates 25 years of innovation,” said Toyota, “the 2026 Toyota Prius stands as a testament to Toyota’s dedication to carbon reduction.”
The vehicle’s safety suite includes pre-collision systems with pedestrian detection and dynamic radar cruise control among other features aimed at enhancing driver convenience and security.
Pricing for the new Prius starts at $28,550 for the LE grade, excluding dealer processing fees.
Toyota emphasizes its ongoing commitment to sustainability and next-generation mobility solutions through its wide range of electrified vehicles and educational initiatives under its Driving Possibilities program.
The company plans further expansion into electric vehicle components with a new battery manufacturing plant set to open in North Carolina by spring 2025.
