UNC Health is currently negotiating a new agreement with Cigna as their existing three-year contract approaches its expiration on November 30, 2025. The healthcare provider has alerted employers and patients that coverage could change if a new deal is not reached.
Without an agreement by December 1, 2025, all Cigna commercial plans will be considered out of network for UNC Health services. This change could lead to increased costs for Cigna members using UNC Health’s providers, clinics, and hospitals.
UNC Health has been in discussions with Cigna for nearly two years aiming to finalize the terms well before the current contract ends. However, according to UNC Health leaders, Cigna has not shown willingness to engage in meaningful discussions or commit to patient care standards required by UNC Health. As the situation develops, UNC Health advises employers and Cigna members to stay informed.
Despite ongoing negotiations, UNC Health remains hopeful for a mutually beneficial resolution before the contract expires. During upcoming enrollment periods, it suggests that employers and patients consider alternative insurance plans that ensure UNC Health remains in-network throughout 2026.
Currently, there are no changes affecting Cigna members who can continue accessing care at all UNC Health facilities without interruption. Appointments can still be scheduled as usual with associated healthcare providers.
UNC Health commits to providing updates as they become available. More information about accepted insurance coverage can be found at unchealth.org/records-insurance/insurance.
